ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Gail Epstein MengelDr. Gail Epstein Mengel has been a certified and licensed school psychologist for over 35 years. She has individually assessed more than 3,000 children aged 5 to 18. As a field trainer and graduate school professor, she has mentored numerous students to become school psychologists. She has lectured at the national, state and regional levels as well as authored many articles for national and professional publications.

Dr. Epstein Mengel’s initial interest in organizational skills began in the early 1980’s. At that time she was faced with the challenge of assessing many so-called “noncompliant” children who were being described as “lazy,” “avoidant,” “resistant,” and “unmotivated.” In that process she discovered that these children were actually handicapped by a significant difficulty with space and time perception—the basis for disorganization.

Her new understanding and her interests led her to the emerging study of “executive functioning,” a brain “activity” that has since become more widely understood for its contribution to purposeful, organized performance. Since that time, executive functioning has taken a front seat in the study of many learning and performance disorders, including attention deficit disorder, nonverbal learning disabilities, learning disabiltiies, and disorders on the autism spectrum.

Dr. Epstein Mengel authored the Homework Organizer in its first edition in 1991, developing the second completely revised second edition in 2002. The current Homework Organizer / H2O, updated in 2007, represents the latest refinement of this self-published book.
